California Moving Checklist

Your step-by-step guide to a smooth and stress-free move in the Golden State.

4+ Weeks Before Moving

  • Create a moving folder to track quotes, receipts, and paperwork

  • Book a licensed and insured moving company (like G Brothers Transportation)

  • Schedule a visual estimate for long-distance moves (mileage and weight-based pricing)

  • If renting, notify your landlord and review your lease for move-out instructions

  • Begin decluttering — donate, sell, or discard items you don’t plan to bring

  • Research and set up storage options if needed

  • Start collecting packing supplies: boxes, tape, bubble wrap, labels, etc.

  • Make a list of people and services to notify about your move (banks, employers, subscriptions, etc.)

2–3 Weeks Before Moving

  • Start packing non-essential items and clearly label all boxes

  • Schedule utility shutoff/startup at both your current and new homes

    • PG&E, Cal-Am Water, Monterey One Water, Recology, Internet providers

  • Change your address with the USPS online: https://www.usps.com

  • Update address with important services (DMV, banks, insurance, schools)

  • Request time off work for moving day, if needed

  • Confirm moving dates and details with your movers

  • Arrange child or pet care for moving day, if necessary

1 Week Before Moving

  • Pack most of your remaining items, leaving essentials for your final days

  • Disassemble large furniture if you're packing it yourself

  • Reconfirm utility transfers and moving appointment

  • Pack a “first night” essentials box (toiletries, bedding, chargers, snacks, change of clothes)

  • Prepare valuables and important documents to move separately or personally

  • If moving long-distance, check your homeowners or renters insurance policy for moving coverage

Moving Day

  • Be present or have someone you trust available during the move

  • Walk movers through your home and point out fragile or high-priority items

  • Take photos of high-value items before the move for insurance purposes

  • Do a final walkthrough of your old home (check closets, cabinets, garage)

  • Lock all doors and turn off lights and utilities as needed

  • Keep your “first night” box with you

After the Move

  • Unpack room by room, starting with essentials

  • Check all items against your inventory and note any issues

  • Confirm all utilities are functioning in your new home

  • Update your DMV address within 10 days of the move: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/

  • Register to vote at your new address: https://registertovote.ca.gov

  • Explore your new neighborhood and locate grocery stores, pharmacies, and service providers
